W1: Advanced Characterisation and Geometallurgy of Iron Ores
CSIRO optical image analysis Mineral4/Recognition4 for iron ore, sinter and coke characterisation

27 – 28 July 2017

This two-day workshop will provide an opportunity to increase your understanding of geometallurgy and characterisation of different iron ores and sinters. Leading researchers from CSIRO will share their experience and talk about novel developments in these areas. Each day can be attended independently.

Day 1 Workshop: The workshop will start with an introduction to iron ore geology, mineralogy, chemistry and deposit styles. Gangue mineralogy and chemistry will also be discussed and a deeper understanding of the sub-divisions of goethite types backed-up with practical demonstrations with hand specimens and photomicrographs. The workshop conveners will also provide an overview of geometallurgical classification and its application to improving downstream processing outcomes. Following a tour of CSIRO’s Advanced Characterisation facility attendees will be provided with review of different techniques and methods for 2D and 3D iron ore characterisation The day will conclude with an overview of optical image analysis of iron ore, sinter and coke using CSIRO OIA software Mineral4/Recognition4 and a case study comparing OIA and scanning electron microscope (QEMSCAN) as classification tools.

Day 2 Workshop: Day 2 will start with practical demonstration of different ore texture groups and the presentation of four case studies on importance of ore texture for prediction of downstream processing. Further the developers of the Mineral4/Recognition4 Optical Image Analysis software package, a proven tool for automated characterisation and classification of iron ore, sinter, coke and pellets, will discuss the capabilities of the package, including those already used by corporate customers and recent developments. This session will also include presentations on magnetite and manganese ore characterisation and processing; and iron ore sintering, iron ore sinter petrology and sinter phase classification.

W3: Tailings and water management, innovative solutions to a global issue

27 July 2017

Tailings dams are often the most significant environmental liability, and present a long-term cost to the mining industry at large.  This workshop looks at the various key considerations involved with determining an optimal tailings disposal operation and the perspective of experts from different fields such as Miners, Mining Engineers, Process Plant Managers, Suppliers, who will share their experiences from around the world of various issues, concepts, designs and operations. The fundamental drivers of design and the impacts of various variables such as environmental, political and economic factors that impact the industry landscape will also be discussed. Current codes of practice guidelines and regulations will be reviewed and methods and studies of disposal configurations, constructions, operations and closures.
